The Ricardian Podcast 3

The third episode of the Society’s Ricardian Podcast is now out, with a focus on Edward IV’s great French gambit and Richard III’s Titulus Regius.

Five hundred and 50 years after Edward IV led the largest English force ever then seen across the Channel to invade France, Dr David Grummitt takes us through the story of the invasion of France in 1475. There may have been no battles but did it represent the greatest ‘victory’ of the Yorkist era? David offers some context and his view, exploring topics from the cover story of the September edition of the Ricardian Bulletin.

Next the podcast takes a deep dive into the Titulus Regius of Richard III with Dr Joanna Laynesmith. Drawing on her article from the September Bulletin. Joanna discusses the Titulus Regius and its subsequent repeal by Henry VII, plus its interpretation during the reign of Mary I.

Bosworth Commemorations

This year’s Bosworth commemorations began at Leicester Cathedral, where Society Chair Amanda Geary, accompanied by Leicestershire Branch Secretary Sally Henshaw, laid a wreath of white roses on Richard’s tomb.

Afterwards, a Rose Laying Ceremony was held at Bosworth Battlefield where Richard Knox from the Battlefield Centre team related what happened at the battle, followed by a response from Amanda Geary. Music was provided by Gaudeamus.

New Ricardian Podcast

The latest edition of The Ricardian Podcast has landed with guests Philippa Langley, talking about her new book, and Dr David Grummitt talking about the legacy of the Battle of Bosworth, 540 years on.

In the 40-minute episode hosted by Bulletin editor Alec Marsh, Philippa talks about the latest findings of The Missing Princes Project which are revealed in her new book, The Princes in the Tower: How History’s Greatest Cold Case Was Solved, and what they mean for what we know about what happened to the so-called Princes in the Tower, Edward V and Richard, Duke of York. As you’ll see the latest findings go further than ever in showing that both boys survived the reign of Richard III.

Next David Grummitt talks about the impact of the Battle of Bosworth on British and world history. Did the famous battle really change he world? David offers his fascinating insights on the long shadow of this battle and its place in British history.

Duke of Gloucester attends book launch

On Thursday 10th April, the Richard III Society held a launch event for our new book, ‘The Ricardian Century; A History of the Richard III Society’ by former editor of the Ricardian Bulletin, John Saunders.

The event was held at the College of Arms in London and we were delighted to welcome our Patron, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, to the event.

The Duke met and chatted to members present and speeches were then given by Society Chair Amanda Geary and Ricardian Century author John Saunders. The Duke then said a few words and gave the toast – ‘to the Richard III Society and Good King Richard’.

Afterwards, the Duke was presented by a pair of silver boar cufflinks by Amanda Geary on behalf of the Society.

The event, which brought to an end the Society’s centenary celebrations, was held at the College of Arms, itself founded by King Richard III in 1484. The Society is very grateful to Principal Garter King of Arms Sir David White and York Herald Peter O’Donohue for their help.

Launch of Ricardian Bulletin Podcast

Welcome to the Ricardian Podcast!

The Richard III Society is delighted to announce that it has launched a podcast. The idea for the Ricardian podcast is to help spread the Society’s message online and to help members get more from the Society publications – the Bulletin and The Ricardian – and also deepen their membership of the Society through the experience of a whole new format.

The podcast is brought to you by the team behind the Ricardian Bulletin and in the first episode it explores some of the highlights of the March edition of the Bulletin.
